Good morning 20 September
Phew!
At last we have reached the shelter of Scoresby Sund. Weather report from the Captain at 0730 was 25 knot winds and zero degrees.
Yesterday and last night we were battered by 52 knot wind, over 100km. Just wow. Looking out from the dining room last night truely looked like CGI images for a disaster movie. Absolutely monstrous waves. Monster. Can't say it enough. Unfortunately it was impossible to photograph given the hour, and the constant wash across the windows.
About half the passengers turned up for dinner and we all wished at least one more had stayed away. This guy vomited into his plate of food at the table, and when that was cleared away by the poor staff, continued to sit at the table with this friends, and vomit into sick bags throughout the meal.
Being slammed about the boat did lose its appeal by the end of the day, particularly when getting up during the night was such a high risk activity.
I still feel a little queasy, and having a really sore throat, but my tooth/nerve pain has certainly lessened. I'll take that!
Ten minutes later ...OMG! First iceberg of the journey. Incredible. I took photos from a freezing deck, amidst snow flurries. How damn awesome is that?
Announcements come over PA for anything of interest - whales, icebergs, aurora (fingers crossed) so one has to be ready to don warm clothes and scoot on out to the deck at any time. So good.
This afternoon, weather permitting, we are going for a zip about in the zodiacs. I'd better start charging, planning and packing cameras.
:))
