Reykjavik

After firstly going through the Departure Immigration by mistake and having to double back, I somehow then managed to avoid the Arrival Immigration all together at Reykjavik airport. Lucky it wasn't Beijing or I'd still be there. My driver was waiting for me and as I was the only passenger, I sat up front and was entertained with 30 minutes of interesting Icelandic information and Icelandic Latvian dad jokes on the drive to the city centre.  Iceland weather must change as often as Melbourne weather, as the jokes are the same - 'you can get four seasons in one day' 'if you don't like the weather wait 15 minutes and you'll have something different'.

Slightly unsettling tooling along at 100km last in a line of six cars, none with more than one car-length between. He disobeyed the new city centre traffic rules and dropped me straight to the hotel. There's recently been a law limiting pickup and drop off points to just 9 bus stops in an attempt to ease the number of minivans and traffic throughout the centre of town. I will have to walk to the bus stop for cruise pickup tomorrow morning though and will no doubt curse the paved paths and the dodgy wheels on my suitcase.  I settled in to my lovely little apartment then walked to the harbour for some drinks, people and water watching from a cosy spot, and ended with delicious fish and potatoes for dinner.   I came very close to being run over on the way to dinner, looking the wrong way for the direction of cars.  On the way home I paid more attention, waiting for a green pedestrian light, and again was nearly run over.  Pedestrian lights must be pure recommendations for Iceland drivers.  Wildly tired by then and had a good night's rest.

Lazy morning in my little apartment, coffee and FaceTime chat with Gemma, before heading out.
A long, long walk around the very picturesque city centre. I did get to the cathedral, but was not in a queuing mood to wait for the lift to the tower. It was quite overcast at the time and I didn't take my big camera with me, so the views can wait.  It has been slightly overcast most of the day with a bracing wind appearing occasionally - around 12 degrees.

I had a leisurely lunch at Apotek.  I can now say I have tasted Mink Whale and won't ever feel the need to do so again.  I didn't anticipate its rawness, but bravely tasted a few pieces.  The flavour was good, but I'm not a fan of that texture.  Dessert was superb.

A little tricky remembering street names.  I took this one for you, Gemma.

Every building is worthy of a postcard.

Great to see you've arrived and managed the tricks of the airport and the deadly traffic crossings. It was 3 degrees in the morning in Melbourne yesterday - rising to 18 and about 2.30pm when we were out for coffee people were saying what a beautiful sunny day it was! It was sunny and it was beautiful compared to our recent days, but it is supposed to be Spring! Love your photos and hearing from you. (PS. The "subscribe " on blog doesn't work; I've tested it on a draft blog of mine and I can't get an email generated when there's an update to my blog either. Rotten Blogger!!)

A million thanks to my highly paid sub-editor Julie who is resizing all the photos for me. Julie also seems to be the only one who can record comments too, so just let her know your thoughts and feelings and she will record them. 😂
